Choosing the right money calculator

Use the Present Value of Cash Flows Calculator when you want to express a series of future cash amounts in today's value using a chosen discount rate. This can help when comparing cash flows that occur at different times.

The Commission Calculator is designed for sales and earnings calculations. It can calculate commission from sales, determine total earnings, work backwards from a target commission, or calculate the commission rate when the other values are known.

For advertising decisions, use the Break-Even ROAS Calculator to estimate the return on ad spend required for advertising revenue to cover the contribution margin being used in the calculation.

The Tax Shield Calculator estimates the reduction in tax associated with a deductible expense using the deduction amount and the tax rate entered.

Understanding present value

Money received in the future is not necessarily equivalent to the same amount received today. Present-value calculations apply a discount rate to future cash flows to express them as an equivalent value at the present time.

The result depends heavily on the discount rate and timing assumptions. A higher discount rate generally reduces the present value assigned to future cash flows, particularly those occurring further into the future.

Commission and advertising calculations

Commission calculations connect sales performance with a specified commission rate. Depending on the information available, the calculation can be used to find commission earned, total earnings, the sales required to reach a target, or the effective commission rate.

Break-even ROAS approaches advertising from a different direction. Instead of looking only at advertising revenue, it considers how much of each sale is available after the costs included in the contribution-margin calculation. This provides a threshold against which advertising performance can be compared.

Tax shield calculations

A tax shield represents the potential reduction in tax associated with an allowable deduction. A simple tax-shield estimate uses the deductible amount and applicable tax rate to calculate the resulting tax saving.

Actual tax treatment can be more complicated. Whether an expense is deductible, when the deduction can be claimed and which tax rate applies depend on the relevant tax rules and the circumstances of the taxpayer or business.

Using financial calculator results

Financial calculations are only as reliable as the values and assumptions entered. Discount rates, margins, commission structures, costs and tax rates can change the result substantially.

CalcAtlas money calculators are intended to make the calculation method clear and provide useful estimates. They do not provide financial, investment or tax advice. For decisions involving significant amounts of money or individual tax circumstances, check the applicable rules and obtain appropriate professional advice where necessary.
